Join experienced eco-printing practitioner and teacher, Julia Masci, for this day long workshop where you’ll learn the basics of eco printing and bundle dyeing!

Using locally harvested leaves, plants, and historical dye plants, you will create and take home a variety of hemp fabric samples, a one-of-a-kind bandana, and plant prints on water colour paper.

Julia will share with you her essential knowledge on how to print fabrics with plants as well as encouraging a deeper appreciation for the plants that surround us.

The workshop will cover:

- A brief history of natural dyes, bundle dyeing, and eco- printing.

-The process of preparing plant (cellulose) based fibers for best results:

scouring, mordanting, and the use of modifiers.

- What makes a leaf print and how to use iron and tannins to create darker prints.

-The ethics of foraging and gathering locally, growing your own dye/printing plants and

some of the best places to get leaves that print well.

- How to care for your plant-based fabrics.

More about Julia, in her own words:

"I am Julia, a descendant of generations of strong women who skillfully crafted beautiful and functional textile art while fostering a harmonious connection with the world around them.

I specialize in creating eco-friendly works of functional art. Over the last 20 years, I've experimented with marking cloth in various ways using different mediums. More recently, the work I produce stems from my desire and curiosity to be immersed in the natural world and continue experiencing moments of awe and delight. Using natural dyes fulfills that desire.

Beyond finished products and raw materials, I share my findings in workshop form, teaching the art of eco printing and dyeing. I work from my home studio in Guelph, often found amidst piles of leaves, dried flowers, and fabric, accompanied by my three kids, two cats, and a dog.

Working with eco-conscious fabrics like hemp and organic cotton, along with plant dyes to create my products, I encourage people to pay attention not only to the art of handmade items but also to our global environment. Through the use of local leaves and plants, the connection to our immediate environment is strengthened, fostering curiosity about the plants that fill our daily landscapes. This connection invites people to consider our immediate environment and the impact our textile choices have."
