What is Hydrosol?

Hydrosol is a by-product of the steam distillation process. Though it shares many of the same properties as essential oil, hydrosols are made up mostly of water. This means they’re much less concentrated than essential oils and have a softer, more subtle scent, making them a wonderful addition to skin care or aromatherapy products. Compared to essential oils, botanical hydrosols have a more subtle scent than their essential oil counterparts and can safely be used directly on the skin.

What are the benefits of lavender hydrosols?

In Europe, since the Middle Ages, lavender has been present in the gardens of monasteries and herbalists for its antiseptic and healing properties. Today, in herbal medicine, lavender is recognized for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic and sedative properties.
The composition of lavender hydrosol, relatively close to that of lavender essential oil although they have a very different smell, makes it valuable for soothing and treating skin conditions. Its main constituents are anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, analgesic. It is therefore ideal for gently relieving pain, disinfecting and promoting healing. Lavender hydrosol can serve as a facial toner, pure antiseptic, insect repellent, skin soother, and more.

What does Lavender Hydrosol smell like?

Interestingly, many hydrosols do not share the exact same scent as their essential oil counterpart. The scent varies from batch to batch and, similar to wine or honey, the essence is in the timing of the harvest.

At different times in the lavender plant growing process, the fragrance can be sweet, buttery, or earthy. It all depends on the oil content of the lavender derived during the process. The earlier we collect the hydrosol, the more potent it can be. The later we collect, the more floral the fragrance.

It should be noted that “floral water”, which refers to water that has been infused with essential oils, is widely available commercially. As lovely as those can be, they do not contain the soluble plant compounds captured through the distillation process and are not comparable to hydrosols from a therapeutic standpoint.
